7 Things Great Leaders Do

We’ve spent a lot of time with great leaders. And we’ve written a book on leadership. So here is a list of 7 things great leaders do (among so much more). These are universal concepts that also apply when doing strategic planning, and they’re key elements in any executive coaching program. So, whether you are in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kentucky, or Jacksonville, Florida, let’s see how many of these leadership traits you have.

Curious

Great leaders are curious about everything. They are driven to learn more.

Ask questions

How does that work? Why? Tell me more. Most leaders ask lots of questions. Even more importantly, they ask great probing questions that get people talking…and everyone thinking.

Well informed

Leaders read, watch and listen to many sources of information. They want truth and facts, and seek out different sources for unique perspectives.

Communication

It’s hard to be a great leader if you can’t communicate clearly. The superstars seem to be able to get to the essence of the matter and make complex ideas simple.

Open-minded

They know they don’t know it all. And they know they may have blinders in some areas. Most importantly, they know the best ideas may come from the most unlikely sources.

Admit mistakes

When they are wrong, they say so. They acknowledge their shortcomings. And surround themselves with people who compliment their capabilities.

Values

Great leaders are driven by values like honesty, fairness and compassion. They play by the rules and do what is right even when no one is watching.
