Rethink your business mindset
Department stores ignored the Sears catalog. Sears stores struggled to adapt to Walmart. Then the internet changed everything.
No one has a crystal ball. But you can help position your business by thinking differently. Ask what if questions. Talk with customers and find out what they really want now…and will need in the future. Sometimes that’s exactly what you sell them. But not always.
The key is having the mindset to seek out, listen to, and contemplate new information. The next new thing won’t necessarily come knocking on your door and announce itself. But it actually did back in 2000 when Netflix wanted to sell to Blockbuster Video for $50 million. Blockbuster said no. Today, Netflix is worth nearly $300 billion. And, of course, Blockbuster is out of business. That was only 22 years ago.
By the way, the first Apple iPhone was released 15 years ago. Yeah, things change fast.
The upshot: actively go out and seek new ideas. Really listen to what people are saying. And then figure out how the new information you received changes things.
