Executive Coaching’s Triple Crown

Even if you don’t follow horse racing, you probably know that Justify has won the first two legs of the Triple Crown. With a win in New York on June 9, this fleet-footed three-year old would be only the second Thoroughbred in the last forty years to win the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont in the same year. Since this isn’t the Racing Form, let me draw the parallel to executive coaching in Cincinnati, or whatever track you race out of in America.

Executive Coaching’s First Leg

The first leg of the executive coaching Triple Crown is taking action toward improvement. It first requires coming to the realization that you (or others on your team) can improve effectiveness at work. Then comes interviewing executive coaches and selecting the right one for your situation.

Executive Coaching’s Second Leg

The second leg gets more difficult. After thoroughly assessing you and the situation, your executive coach presents you with new ideas and recommendations. And expects you to try and then embrace them. For this to work, you need to have a commitment to change. And as everyone knows, change is hard. But in the case of executive coaching, change is essential.

Executive Coaching’s Third Leg

The final leg of the executive coaching Triple Crown is practice and feedback. Now that you know what you need to work on, and how to do it, it’s time to make it happen. It takes hard work, but everyone who wants to improve and is working with a top flight executive coach will make progress. As you do, continue to look for feedback from co-workers, family members and your business coach.

In horse racing, winning the Triple Crown is emblematic of the sport’s greatest achievement. While there is significantly less fanfare for winning the executive coaching Triple Crown—and far less wagering—it still represents an enormous accomplishment. And one that will help you and your company succeed at a greater rate for the rest of your career.
