‘Tis the time of year for charitable giving, and Americans are the most generous people on earth. If you are fortunate enough to be in a position to contribute to a cause, here’s one you may want to consider: animals in need.
Having recently published The Fido Factor, a book on the leadership lessons we can learn from dogs, it probably comes as no surprise that we support dog rescue charities. After all, we spent two years thinking about and writing about dogs. So, in addition to our normal giving, we are making a donation to our favorite dog rescue charities for each copy of The Fido Factor we sell.
What’s the single best way to help? Adopt a rescue dog! Few things in life are as pure as the love of a dog…and rescues seem to appreciate your generosity even more.
Finding a Shelter
If you are thinking about contributing to an animal welfare organization, here are a few things to keep in mind as you look for a dog rescue charity that best fits your interests and passion.
- Keep it local. Find a shelter near where you live so you can see what they do. Just search for dog rescue and the name of your city to start the process.
- Check them out. No, not like dogs sniff in embarrassing places. Look up the charity in Charity Navigator or Charity Watch.
- You don’t have to give money. Donate food, toys and other items, or volunteer your time.
Tax Benefits of Charitable Giving
While charitable donations should be made because you want to help, it doesn’t hurt that there may be tax reasons to give you that extra nudge. Here are some reminders:
- Talk with your tax advisor about the details, but in general, a donation to a qualified charitable organization may allow you a tax deduction if you itemize.
- Charitable organizations need funding year-round, so any time is a good time to help a worthwhile cause. Contributions are deductible in the year they are paid.
Dogs will give you their unconditional love and defend you against all threats. They can even help you become a better leader. But sometimes they need help. If you want to give back to those furry friends in need, ‘tis the season. There’s no better time to donate to a dog rescue charity.
