The Change Culture

The world has changed. And it continues to change at a faster rate. No business or industry is impervious. I deal with change in my executive coaching and strategic planning work. Of course, the change culture impacts organizations in Cincinnati, Ohio, Kentucky, Jacksonville, Florida and all over the world. Are you ready?

You can’t lay around

Ask mattress manufacturers and retailers about change. In the past, people bought box springs and coil mattresses from retail stores. Today, the majority of mattresses are bought online and delivered direct to the consumer. And they’re made of materials that are both extremely comfortable and shippable.

The revolution didn’t happen overnight. Did executives at traditional bedding companies respond quickly enough?

Look for the signals

Change is one of the key drivers in why I facilitate so many strategic planning sessions. Executive leadership, like everyone else, gets in ruts. They have blinders and biases. And that’s why they bring in an outside facilitator to help them see things differently.

Leaders need to stay up on industry trends. And especially ones that involve new technology. High tech is driving change in every market. It might impact order entry systems, manufacturing, marketing or distribution. The personal computer changed the world. Then the wireless smart phone flipped the script again. What’s next?

Adapting to change

The leadership team’s attitude toward change is the most important factor in how well an organization responds and adapts. Leaders who embrace change surround themselves with others who feel the same. And their odds of success go up dramatically.

To paraphrase Darwin, the world belongs to those who are most adaptable. In business, that means the ability to reinvent. Competing against oneself, if necessary. Surrounding yourself with people who ask what if and how else could we. And challenging the status quo.
